Ladakh's Hydrogen Bus Initiative: Pioneering Green Mobility on World's Highest Roads

In a groundbreaking move towards sustainable transportation, five hydrogen fuel cell-based buses are set to commercially operate in Leh district, Ladakh, home to the world's highest motorable roads. The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) Limited formally handed over the buses to the State Industrial Development Corporation in a ceremony at the green hydrogen mobility station in Palam, Leh.
This marks India's first commercial deployment of hydrogen-powered buses, a significant stride in green mobility initiatives. Transport Department Administrative Secretary Bhupesh Chaudhary conducted a thorough inspection of the NTPC's green hydrogen plant, highlighting its role in the administration's vision for a carbon-neutral Ladakh.
Chief Secretary Pawan Kotwal emphasized the project's significance, suggesting it could herald a new era of hydrogen fuel cell mobility across India. The initiative underscores India's leadership in renewable energy innovation, setting a precedent for sustainable public transport in challenging, high-altitude environments.
