The remains of Irfan Shaikh, a member of the ill-fated crew on Air India's flight 171 that crashed in Ahmedabad, have been identified through DNA matching, relatives confirmed on Friday.
The tragic crash, which occurred shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Airport, claimed the lives of 241 onboard and 29 on the ground. Shaikh's uncle, Firoz, shared the arduous journey of identifying his nephew's remains through DNA samples.
Plans to repatriate Irfan's body to Pune for last rites are underway, amidst a somber atmosphere for a young man whose career in aviation had just taken flight. Irfan had ambitions in the field but, as his uncle lamented, those dreams were tragically quashed.
