Three kanwariyas died and 18 were injured after a truck carrying the Shiva devotees overturned on Rishikesh-Gangotri highway in Tehri district on Wednesday, police said.

The kanwariyas hailing from Bulandshahr district of Uttar Pradesh were going towards Harshil in Uttarkashi district when the accident took place, said Narendra Nagar police station in-charge Sanjay Mishra.

The injured were admitted at a hospital in Narendra Nagar and at AIIMS, Rishikesh, he said.

The accident occurred at around 9 am at Tachchla between Fakot and Jajal, Mishra said.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami condoled the death of three kanwar pilgrims in the accident and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured.

Quoting Tehri's District Magistrate Nitika Khandelwal, he said the incident occurred two km ahead of Khadi.

After the accident, the administration conducted immediate relief and rescue operation and took out all the passengers from under the truck.

District Magistrate Khandelwal rushed to the spot with SDRF and police personnel to launch a rescue operation.

The deceased were identified as Vicky, Sunil Saini and Sanjay. Four injured have been admitted to AIIMS-Rishikesh and the rest to Narendra Nagar hospital, police said. Though the exact cause of the accident has not been ascertained yet, the driver apparently lost control over the vehicle while negotiating a steep slope and it overturned, Mishra said.
