In a startling revelation, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari informed Parliament that road accidents on National Highways claimed 26,770 lives in the first six months of 2025.

Addressing the Rajya Sabha, Gadkari stated that 52,609 fatal accidents occurred on National Highways in 2024. To combat this, the National Highways Authority of India has implemented Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) across high-traffic corridors.

The ATMS features innovative electronic enforcement devices, enabling rapid incident detection and monitoring to enhance response times and improve safety. The setup is being incorporated into new projects and retrofitted onto existing crucial corridors.
