Sunil Bharti Mittal, chairman of Bharti Enterprises, has assured stakeholders that the recently signed India-UK Free Trade Agreement prioritizes data security, maintaining that India's data provisions remain uncompromised. Mittal highlighted India's unique position in global digital connectivity, emphasizing that data exchanges will be limited to trusted partners only.
In a focused dialogue with ANI, Mittal stated, "Data movement is crucial in today's trade landscape. With India's advancements in digital connectivity—often surpassing global standards—we have a distinct stance on data sharing. India's FTAs, like the one with the UK, foster relationships with nations deemed trustworthy for data exchange."
Mittal also touched upon India's data protection measures, including the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, which aims to bolster data security. Addressing concerns over satellite internet in conflict situations, he mentioned that the government has the authority to impose internet shutdowns through licensed operators like Starlink and OneWeb, thereby adhering to established regulations.
The India-UK FTA, signed in the presence of Prime Ministers Modi and Starmer, seeks to enhance trade by reducing tariffs on imports and exports between the countries. This agreement aims to make Indian and UK products more competitive in each other's markets, strengthening economic ties.
