The Maharashtra government is set to shake up the ride-hailing market with the introduction of a new mobile application for cabs, auto-rickshaws, and bike taxis. This initiative, announced by state transport minister Pratap Sarnaik, aims to empower local youth by providing them with self-employment opportunities.

The move is seen as a strategy to challenge the dominance of existing private aggregators such as Ola, Uber, and Rapido. The state has already crafted a policy framework for bike taxi services, though formal approval is still pending.

Collaborations with entities like the Maharashtra Institute of Transport Technology are underway to develop the app, which will be branded under potential names like Jai Maharashtra, Maha-ride, or Maha-Go. A crucial meeting on the progress is scheduled for August 5, with final approval from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CMs expected soon.
