Infrastructure Crisis: Landslides and Flooding Disrupt Key Routes in Sikkim and West Bengal

Severe weather conditions have paralyzed transportation routes in Sikkim and portions of West Bengal, turning the spotlight on infrastructural vulnerabilities in the region. The relentless rains have swollen the Teesta river, causing a breach that submerged the critical NH-10, a key conduit in the area.
Landslides exacerbated the situation, with crucial blockages noted at Tarkhola in Kalimpong, as well as Bardang between Singtam and Rangpo. Officials indicate that clearing efforts are stalled due to ongoing rains, leaving important roads impassable and communities isolated.
The situation is further deteriorated by additional landslides in Gangtok and Pakyong districts, as authorities caution travelers to avoid NH-10. Alternative routes are advised until effective restoration efforts reclaim the damaged roadways and declining water levels signal safer passage.
