In a move to reboot Goa's mining sector, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant confirmed that 12 iron ore mining blocks have been e-auctioned, and activities have commenced in three, promising a phased revival. This comes after the sector's halt in 2012 due to reported illegalities highlighted by the M B Shah Commission.
The discussion gained momentum when Congress MLA Altone D'Costa raised inquiries in the state assembly about the timeline for the full resumption of mining operations. Chief Minister Sawant responded by noting that while three blocks are operational, others await necessary clearances from pertinent ministries.
Sawant also elaborated on plans to auction iron ore piles dumped statewide, with mining of these heaps slated to start from October 2025. This initiative marks a crucial step in Goa's strategic efforts to reenergize its mining industry.
