The Goa government has reported a substantial income of over Rs 1,661 crore from the casino industry over the past five years, as stated by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant. This figure was disclosed during a session in the state assembly, highlighting the significant economic contribution of the casinos to the coastal state.
Chief Minister Sawant, in response to a query from BJP MLA Michael Lobo, presented a detailed financial account of the recurring annual fees from licensed casinos. The data showed a steady increase in revenue with Rs 186.35 crore collected in the 2021-22 fiscal year, rising to Rs 603.76 crore in 2023-24.
The government is actively working with the Captain of Ports Department to identify new permanent locations for the offshore casinos currently situated in the Mandovi river, as part of a strategic relocation plan.
