A railway inspection has led to the closure of a base kitchen in Kochi and a hefty Rs 1 lakh fine due to violations in hygiene standards. A three-member panel from the railways and the IRCTC conducted the review, shedding light on unsanitary practices jeopardizing passenger health.
The issue was discussed in the Lok Sabha, with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw responding to a query from Congress MP Hibi Eden concerning the unhygienic food provided to express train passengers. Emphasizing transparency, the minister noted the regular tendering conducted by IRCTC to select licensees that comply with stringent terms and conditions.
In efforts to enhance food quality and safety, the IRCTC actively monitors and reviews catering contractors. New measures, such as installing CCTV in kitchens and using branded raw materials, are underway. Additionally, the potential involvement of community initiatives like Kudumbashree's Samrudhi has been tested for future catering roles.
