Eastern Railway authorities have levied fines totaling Rs 5.64 lakh on 1,400 passengers for multiple irregularities, primarily involving ticketless travel, over a span of two days at Howrah station, an official revealed on Thursday.

This enforcement operation, supervised by the railway magistrate, seeks to dissuade ticketless travel and promote legal and responsible journey practices among commuters, according to the Eastern Railway official.

A stringent magistrate ticket-checking drive conducted at Howrah station on Tuesday and Wednesday uncovered over 1,400 irregularities, with 1,011 cases involving ticketless travel, leading to the collection of substantial fines, the official stated.
