Uttarakhand has emerged as a hotspot for helicopter crashes and fatalities in India, with the state accounting for a majority of incidents reported over the last five years. Social activist Anoop Nautiyal, citing official figures, revealed the alarming frequency of accidents, particularly on the Char Dham Yatra route.
Between May and June this year, five helicopter crashes were reported in the state. Nautiyal pointed out in Rajya Sabha, citing Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol's statements, that of the 12 major crashes nationwide, seven occurred in Uttarakhand, leading to 21 of the 30 fatalities.
Nautiyal criticized the lack of action from authorities who, he claims, focus more on increasing tourist numbers than ensuring safety. He called for a comprehensive audit of helipad operations and emphasized the urgency of placing human safety above tourism records, urging both state and aviation officials to act decisively.
