In a significant move, Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the first cargo trial on National Waterway-57 along Assam's Kopili River. This marks the revival of intra-state freight transport after more than ten years.
The trial run covered a distance from Kamrup's Govardhan bridge to Hatsingimari in South Salmara-Mankachar district, with the vessel MV VV Giri carrying 300 tons of cement.
This initiative is part of a broader plan under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership to rejuvenate inland waterways, reducing road congestion and emissions, and supporting economic, efficient, and environmentally friendly transport systems.
