Tragedy Strikes: Fatal Car Plunge Highlights Meghalaya Highway Hazards

A tragic accident on the Shillong-Dawki road in Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills district claimed the lives of five individuals, including a pregnant woman and a toddler, when their car careened into a 70-foot-deep gorge. The incident occurred near a hazardous section of the highway known for sharp bends and dense fog.

The vehicle was traveling from Shillong to Langkyrdem when the driver reportedly lost control amid low visibility conditions, leading to the fatal plunge. Rescuers, comprising police and local volunteers, faced significant challenges in recovering the bodies due to steep terrain and poor visibility.

The accident site, part of the under-construction Shillong-Dawki highway corridor, has posed safety concerns for locals, who cite the absence of guardrails and signage as major risks. Families of the victims call for government action to investigate possible negligence in road maintenance.
