The European Investment Bank (EIB) has approved a new €45 million green loan to BrianzAcque, the publicly owned integrated water service provider for Monza and Brianza, Italy. This major financing package is set to propel the company’s 2025–2029 investment plan, targeting critical improvements to the water and sewerage infrastructure for nearly 877,000 residents in the province.
Advancing Climate-Resilient Water Infrastructure
The EIB’s support, announced jointly by Vice-President Gelsomina Vigliotti and BrianzAcque Chairperson and CEO Enrico Boerci, will be instrumental in modernizing the region’s water management systems. Structured as a green loan and backed by the European Union’s InvestEU program, the funding will enhance water service quality, strengthen defences against floods and overflows, and future-proof essential infrastructure against the rising risks of extreme weather due to climate change.
“Investing in modern and resilient water infrastructure is key to protecting our regions from the effects of climate change and to significantly reducing water losses, one of our water service’s main challenges. This new funding supports safer, more efficient and more sustainable water management to benefit people and the environment,” said EIB Vice-President Vigliotti.
Strategic Works to Transform Water Services
The ambitious investment plan will support a series of strategic projects designed to deliver immediate and long-term benefits. Key initiatives include:
-
Expanding Water Treatment Capacity: Upgrades and extensions to existing water treatment plants to ensure safe, reliable supply and higher quality standards.
-
Laying New Sewer Pipelines: Construction of 16 kilometres of new sewer pipes, expanding coverage and efficiency for local communities.
-
Separating Rainwater from Sewerage: Implementation of systems to divert rainwater from traditional sewer lines, reducing the risk of overflows during storms and lowering treatment costs.
-
Building Retention Basins: New basins will temporarily collect rainwater, helping to prevent urban flooding and manage storm surges more effectively.
-
Urban and Social Regeneration: The project incorporates innovative, sustainable solutions to urban regeneration, designed to integrate water management with broader community revitalization and environmental stewardship.
During the project’s rollout, approximately 50 new jobs will be created, supporting both the local economy and the region’s broader green transition.
Partnership for Sustainable Development
The latest loan marks another chapter in the long-standing partnership between the EIB and BrianzAcque. Previous financing agreements, including an initial loan in 2017 and further support in 2021, have already played a critical role in strengthening water infrastructure in Monza and Brianza. This new investment underscores the EIB’s ongoing commitment to supporting sustainable development and climate adaptation in Italy and across Europe.
BrianzAcque’s Chairperson and CEO Enrico Boerci welcomed the financing, stating, “We are delighted with this new EIB financing, which is not only a concrete opportunity to strengthen water services on the ground, but also a clear vote of confidence in our vision and design expertise. BrianzAcque is a robust and dynamic publicly owned company committed to sustainable long-term design. Working together with the member municipalities and the service area means we can look to the future with ambition and responsibility.”
A Model for Green Transition and Community Resilience
The investments planned under the 2025–2029 initiative will play a crucial role in tackling water loss—one of the most pressing challenges for Italy’s water sector. By integrating nature-based solutions, new technologies, and urban planning best practices, BrianzAcque aims to set a benchmark for climate-resilient, community-driven water management.
The partnership between the EIB and BrianzAcque serves as a model for how public financing and technical expertise can combine to create safer, greener, and more prosperous communities.
