In a sign of cautious optimism, the economic conditions of rural consumers in India have improved slightly over the past two months, according to the Reserve Bank of India's latest Rural Consumer Confidence Survey. The survey, conducted between July 1 and 12, 2025, with 7,924 respondents, shows a marginal uptick in consumer sentiment.

The data reveals that 41.6% of rural consumers believe their economic situation has improved recently, while 24% feel it remains unchanged. Meanwhile, 34.4% reported a worsening situation, and 7.1% offered no response. Despite this uptick, employment conditions remain stagnant, according to survey findings. The Current Situation Index showed a slight increase due to broad-based improvements, reflecting a more optimistic rural populace.

The survey, which encompasses views from rural and semi-urban households across all Indian states and major Union Territories, aims to capture perceptions and expectations on key indicators such as economic conditions, employment, income, and inflation. Looking ahead, rural consumers expressed optimism, with 59.6% expecting economic improvements in the coming year. As inflation perceptions decline, the survey indicates a growing sense of recovery despite ongoing challenges.
