Northern Railway has made a groundbreaking move by approving Anantnag station for freight operations on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Line (USBRL). This significant development is poised to transform the logistics sector in Kashmir, offering businesses a new and efficient transport option.
The station, operational daily from 6 am to 10 pm, will handle various goods, excluding petroleum and related products. This marks the first instance of USBRL facilitating freight operations, following a notification sent to relevant departments. The approval involves opening a goods shed to accommodate freight trains using the historic Chenab and Anji bridges.
Officials believe this initiative will bring substantial benefits, enhancing connectivity and providing new trade prospects. The move is expected to save transit time and costs, particularly during winter when roads are often disrupted, thus boosting regional economic growth by granting better market access for Kashmiri products.
