On Saturday, the government sharply criticized the opposition Congress party for trying to claim credit for significant GST reforms. Accusing Congress of hypocrisy, the government highlighted the party's absence during the pivotal parliamentary session when the one-nation, one-tax reform was passed.
Government sources recounted the history of the GST rollout, noting that when Congress was in power in 2004, the economy was strong. However, Congress failed to unify states behind the GST initiative, allegedly due to a lack of leadership qualities among its leaders.
Top officials accused Congress of trying to leverage the pro-poor, pro-middle-class, and pro-MSME tax plan reforms for political gain. The government branded Congress's actions as obstructionist and counterproductive to the interests of the common man.
