The 'Stree Shakti' bus scheme in Andhra Pradesh has successfully facilitated free travel for over 12 lakh women in just 30 hours since its launch. This ambitious program, initiated by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on August 15, offers complimentary transit on various APSRTC services to women and transgender individuals holding Andhra Pradesh domicile.
According to state sources, beneficiaries have already saved an estimated Rs 5 crore from the scheme's initial implementation. The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation plans to recover costs by seeking reimbursement for zero-fare tickets from the state government, with the annual projected outlay reaching Rs 1,942 crore.
This effort to empower women through accessible transport has garnered significant public interest. APSRTC reported that despite the Janmastami festival impacting rider numbers, 76,000 beneficiaries used the service on its debut, and over five lakh by Saturday afternoon, projecting increased demand when regular operations resume in the coming week.
