The Maharashtra cabinet has greenlit the reopening of Chipi airport in Sindhudurg district, aiming to uplift tourism and connectivity in the Konkan region. The announcement was made by Minister Nitesh Rane following a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Minister Rane, addressing the media post-meeting, expressed hopes of resuming airport operations before the Ganesh festival starting August 27. The operations had been halted due to technical issues, which were resolved with assistance from former chief minister Narayan Rane.
The airport, operational under the Viability Gap Funding scheme, will now fully resume with night landing facilities being addressed. Located in Chipi village, Vengurla taluka, the airport was inaugurated in October 2021 and is expected to greatly benefit regional tourism and connectivity.
