Near Miss at Poovanur: Rail Safety Revisited as School Van Overturns

A school van overturned while attempting to cross a railway track in Poovanur village, Virudhachalam taluk, Cuddalore district, resulting in injuries to eight students, police reported.

Unlike a non-interlocked crossing where a previous fatal incident occurred, this level crossing is interlocked, ensuring train signals remain red unless gates are securely closed.

The accident on Monday was attributed to driver error. Southern Railway identified negligence as the cause and assured the children's minor injuries received immediate care. The Railway Protection Force and Government Railway Police are pursuing legal action against the driver.

The driver reportedly lost control, causing the van to capsize. No train was scheduled during the accident, allowing villagers to promptly assist the children. Train services remained unaffected, with minimal damage reported. Southern Railway reiterated the crossing's safety compliance and emphasized public caution.

Divisional Railway Manager, Balak Ram Negi, alongside senior officials, examined the location. Southern Railway reaffirmed its commitment to public safety at level crossings, urging vigilance.
