In a statement delivered at the Merchants' Chamber of Commerce and Industry's annual meeting, Amit Mitra, principal chief advisor to the West Bengal chief minister, revealed key statistics about the state's budget. A notable figure was the significant rise in the social sector allocation, which now constitutes 21.6% of the total budget.

Mitra pointed out the impressive leap in social sector spending, climbing from Rs 7,000 crore in 2010-11 to a staggering Rs 62,000 crore today. This increase demonstrates the state's commitment to enhancing social infrastructure and welfare.

The advisor further highlighted a substantial boost in tax collections from West Bengal, exceeding Rs 9 lakh crore from 2017-18 to 2024-25. Mitra noted the state's share of tax devolution aligns with Finance Commission recommendations, indicating a healthier fiscal scenario marked by reduced revenue and fiscal deficits.
