In a significant leadership transition, Deutsche Bahn has appointed Evelyn Palla as its new CEO, making her the first woman to assume the role. The supervisory board of the German state-owned rail operator announced the decision on Tuesday.

Palla, previously the head of the DB Regio unit, will start her tenure on October 1. Her appointment comes as Deutsche Bahn faces challenges due to under-investment and consistent delays in train services. Palla brings with her a wealth of experience, having also worked at Infineon, E.ON, and OeBB.

The transition follows the announced departure of current CEO Richard Lutz, whose period in charge was marked by significant difficulties. Palla's leadership is anticipated to drive necessary changes and improvements within the company.
