In a troubling development, Munich airport was forced to halt operations late Thursday night following a series of unauthorized drone sightings in the area. The latest incident adds to a growing list of mysterious drone activities across Europe, sparking security concerns among European Union countries.

The air traffic at Germany's second-busiest airport was initially curtailed at around 10 pm, escalating to a complete shutdown, airport authorities confirmed. Flights resumed by early Friday morning, shortly after 5 am, according to statements from Stefan Bayer, a spokesperson for Germany's federal police at the Munich airport.

The overnight suspension grounded 17 flights, affecting nearly 3,000 passengers, and rerouted 15 incoming flights to alternate airports. Authorities are yet to ascertain the perpetrators of the overflights. Meanwhile, EU and European leaders are increasing measures to combat the drone threat amidst speculation of Russian involvement, which Russian officials deny.
