India and Qatar engaged in talks on Monday to explore strategies for enhancing bilateral trade and investment relations. Piyush Goyal, India's Commerce and Industry Minister, met with Qatar's Minister of Commerce and Industry, Sheikh Faisal bin Thani bin Faisal Al Thani, to deliberate on potential cooperation avenues.
Amid discussions about a potential free trade agreement, this visit underscores the countries' commitment to diversifying and strengthening their economic relationships. Currently, Qatar is a crucial trading partner for India within the Gulf Cooperation Council, with a bilateral trade volume valued at over USD 14.15 billion in 2024-25.
India primarily imports energy resources from Qatar, but there is a concerted effort to broaden the scope of trade. While India's exports to Qatar include industrial products, food, and machinery, imports remain heavily focused on petroleum and gas, resulting in a significant trade deficit. Future agreements aim to balance this dynamic and encourage mutual growth.
