The Supreme Court on Monday postponed the hearing of telecom giant Vodafone Idea Ltd.'s plea to annul the Department of Telecommunication's (DoT) demands of accumulated adjusted gross revenue (AGR) until October 27. This decision comes amid Vodafone Idea's fresh attempt to contest the DoT's demand for Rs 5,606 crore pertaining to the fiscal year 2016-17.

The AGR, used to compute license fees and spectrum charges for telecom companies, has been a contentious issue. Previously, the Supreme Court ruled that all AGR-related dues are to be paid over a 10-year schedule, rejecting company pleas for rectification of so-called computational errors.

The government, a significant stakeholder in Vodafone Idea, relayed by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, has initiated resolution discussions. Vodafone Idea has petitioned for a reassessment based on the 'Deduction Verification Guidelines' of February 2020, amid a landscape where AGR rules now exclude non-telecom income since 2021.
