In a striking demonstration of discontent, over a thousand garment workers, mostly women, gathered outside their factory in Ranchi on Tuesday to protest against unpaid wages. The protest, which lasted about four hours, disrupted traffic significantly along the Khelgaon-Tatisilway Road, according to local officials.

The HR Manager of Orient Craft Fashion Industries Ltd, Ravi Bhushan, confirmed that salary delays were a pressing issue, attributing the financial pinch to US-imposed tariffs that severely impeded garment exports. Jyoti Devi, a worker, reported not receiving her February and March salaries, receiving just Rs 1,500 in April. Colleague Komal Kumari shared similar grievances, struggling with household expenses due to two months of unpaid wages.

Ranchi's Deputy Labour Commissioner Avinash Krishna stated that the company assured payment settlements by Monday. The unrest reflects wider industrial challenges, as the protest took place shortly after a similar labor unrest in Noida. Authorities stressed the urgency of resolving salary disputes amid escalating financial pressures in the garment export sector.
