Modi Government Faces Double Failure in Fuel and Fertilizer Security

Mallikarjun Kharge, the Congress president, has leveled serious accusations against the Modi government, criticizing its inability to secure fuel and fertilizer supplies crucial to India's stability.

Kharge highlighted persistent issues such as reduced crude oil production and significant gas output decline. He noted that 14 Indian-flagged vessels remain stranded in the Strait of Hormuz, exacerbating fuel supply challenges. This marks the eleventh consecutive year of falling crude oil production, demonstrating a significant 22% decline since 2014–15.

On the fertilizer front, Kharge pointed out that despite geopolitical disruptions, shortages had been reported, with supply dropping to a five-year low by March 2026. The government, critics argue, has failed to diversify imports, further straining the agricultural sector. Kharge's remarks come in response to Murli Manohar Joshi's call to abandon the 'Vishwaguru' rhetoric, suggesting a need for grounded policy reform.
