In a high-stakes meeting on Thursday, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, alongside IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, convened with Scheduled Commercial Banks and key stakeholders to evaluate the risks posed by emerging Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies. Emphasizing the potential misuse of AI to target software vulnerabilities, Sitharaman called for comprehensive preemptive measures to fortify financial IT systems.
While acknowledging the commendable steps taken by banks to reinforce cybersecurity, Sitharaman stressed the unprecedented threats emerging from the latest AI models. She urged a heightened state of alertness and stronger inter-bank coordination to tackle these new challenges, as cited by the Finance Ministry in a communication on social media platform X.
Sitharaman further directed the Indian Banks' Association to establish a structured response mechanism against these threats. Recommendations included hiring leading cybersecurity experts and engaging specialized agencies to bolster the detection and monitoring capacities of banks. Banks have also been advised to promptly report suspicious activities and maintain close collaboration with agencies like the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team.
