India's major ports have exceeded expectations by handling 915.17 million tonnes of cargo in the fiscal year 2025-26, surpassing the annual target of 904 million tonnes. This achievement, highlighted by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, marks a notable year-on-year growth of 7.06% in the maritime sector.
A significant boost in overall capital expenditure to Rs 14,953 crore from Rs 9,708 crore the previous year underlines the sector's development. The addition of 94 ships to the Indian Flag, along with an increase in Indian seafarers, exemplifies the nation's robust expansion in maritime workforce capacity.
With initiatives like Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, India aims to establish itself as the top maritime nation. The focus remains on sustainable, responsible use of ocean resources to drive growth and livelihoods without compromising environmental integrity, covering various sectors from fisheries to coastal tourism.
