Basmati Exporters Demand Fair Shipping Practices Amid Crisis
The Basmati Rice Farmers & Exporters Development Forum is urging government intervention against high, unpredictable shipping costs affecting rice exports. Current charges range greatly, significantly impacting trade viability. Amidst geopolitical issues, exporters face significant financial burdens, leading some to abandon cargo. The forum seeks clearer regulatory guidelines and fair practice enforcement.
The Basmati Rice Farmers & Exporters Development Forum (BRFEDF) has issued a call to action for the government to address what it describes as excessive and ambiguous shipping charges that are threatening the financial viability of rice exports.
According to the forum, war-risk surcharges have skyrocketed, costing exporters between USD 800 to USD 6,000 per container, with many imposed abruptly and unfairly. The ongoing West Asia crisis has exacerbated the situation, with shipping lines rerouting cargo without consultation, leaving exporters to shoulder unforeseen costs.
Forum Chairperson Priyanka Mittal highlighted that these unwarranted practices undermine confidence in India's maritime trade framework. The BRFEDF advocates for regulation of shipping charges and accountability, ensuring exporters are not left with open-ended liabilities.
