Building Resilient Roads in the Himalayas: Challenges and Innovations
Addressing challenges in creating climate-resilient road infrastructure in the Himalayan region, Union minister Nitin Gadkari outlines efforts using global practices and technologies. Key initiatives focus on landslide treatment, geological investigations, and advanced monitoring systems to enhance safety and durability in road construction in hilly terrains.
Union minister Nitin Gadkari highlighted the challenges of building climate-resilient road infrastructure in the Himalayan region during a recent workshop. The complex terrain and recurring natural disasters necessitate innovative approaches.
To address these challenges, India is adopting global best practices and leveraging advanced technologies. Key initiatives include collaborations with THDC India Limited for specialized landslide treatment and with the Geological Survey of India for vital geological investigations.
The government is also prioritizing slope stabilization before road construction, using real-time monitoring systems, and deploying InSAR-based landslide monitoring across Uttarakhand. Extensive surveys incorporating LiDAR and UAV technologies are enhancing these efforts.
