The Oscar statuette awarded to Russian director Pavel Talankin for his documentary 'Mr. Nobody Against Putin' has mysteriously disappeared during transit. The statuette was placed in hold luggage after Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents labeled it a potential security threat, leading to its temporary absence.
Co-director David Borenstein revealed on Instagram that TSA agents at John F. Kennedy International Airport prevented Talankin from carrying the statuette on his flight to Frankfurt with Lufthansa, citing its potential as a weapon. Without a bag, the Oscar was boxed and stowed in the plane's hold, never arriving in Germany.
Lufthansa announced its commitment to locating the missing Oscar, elevating the issue for quicker resolution. Talankin expressed his bewilderment over the situation, noting that he had previously traveled with the Oscar in the cabin without incident. The documentary, focusing on pro-war messaging in Russian schools, has been defended by Talankin as a historical record.
