Pakistan Greenlights Donkey Meat Exports to China Amid Trade Dispute

In a recent development, Pakistan has authorized the export of donkey meat to China, averting a potential shutdown of operations by Hangeng Trade Company. The Chinese firm had earlier warned of the closure of its factory in Gwadar due to persistent bureaucratic delays.

This approval comes amidst Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's planned visit to China for an investment forum. The Hangeng Trade Company operates a slaughterhouse that exports donkey meat and hides, essential for producing a traditional Chinese medicine. The Pakistani government estimates this sector could generate around USD 300 million annually.

Delays in export approvals by Pakistan's Ministry of National Food Security and the Animal Quarantine Department had stalled operations, causing diplomatic friction. Following intervention by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's office, swift action was taken to resolve the issue, ensuring the rapid completion of the export approval process.
