India's Defence Leap: Exporter Emerges

India is stepping into the global arena as a significant defence equipment exporter, a significant shift from its previous role as a major importer. Union Minister Jitendra Singh announced the country's defence production now stands at Rs 1.54 lakh crore. This marks a staggering 174% increase over the past decade.

Remarkably, defense exports have skyrocketed, reaching Rs 23,622 crore—an impressive 34-fold growth in the same timeframe. A key component of this success story is the private sector, contributing approximately Rs 15,000 crore, thus highlighting the trend towards collaborative defence manufacturing.

The shift is attributed to broad reforms across core sectors, which have unlocked a plethora of opportunities for business involvement, spurring faster innovation cycles and the development of indigenous technologies. Government initiatives support this momentum, offering robust funding and policy frameworks to create a fertile ecosystem for research and technological advancement.
