Dramatic Rescue: Greek Coast Guard Saves Crew from Sinking Freighter

The Greek coast guard executed a successful rescue operation early Wednesday, saving all nine crew members of a cargo ship that ran aground and subsequently sank off the island of Andros.

The ship, carrying hundreds of metric tons of soda, had set sail from Albania bound for Ukraine when it struck rocks. Two crew members were saved from the sea, and seven others were rescued from a rugged area on Andros, according to an anonymous official from the coast guard.

While the cause of the accident remains unclear, there are no missing crew members, and no pollution has been detected. However, the coast guard will deploy a sea barrier as a preventative measure.
