An anticipated Atlantic odyssey transformed into turmoil as the MV Hondius cruise faced a hantavirus outbreak, stranded off Cape Verde. With medics in protective gear tending to passengers, the virus claimed three lives and resulted in multiple cases aboard the Dutch-flagged ship.
Specialist teams evacuated the seriously ill as the vessel prepared to sail to Spain's Canary Islands with approval from authorities. After days anchored near West Africa, the cruise set its course for Tenerife, where passengers hope to disembark under medical supervision. However, quarantine measures remain uncertain.
The cruise line, Oceanwide Expeditions, has enforced strict isolation protocols. Despite cramped conditions, the passengers, including Kasem Hato, maintain a calm demeanor, adhering to social distancing and hygiene guidelines, while remaining hopeful for resolution.
