Maharashtra Mandates High Security Registration Plates for Pre-2019 Vehicles
From July 1, Maharashtra mandates High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) for vehicles registered before April 1, 2019. The implementation deadline is extended to June 30, 2025. Intended to curb vehicle theft and crimes, owners face fines for non-compliance, with inspections starting July 2026.
In a significant move, Maharashtra has announced that High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) will be compulsory from July 1 for all vehicles registered prior to April 1, 2019. This initiative aims to enhance vehicle security and make identification more robust, according to Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik.
The state government has extended the deadline for compliance to June 30, 2025, from the initial date of December 31, 2025. The High Security Registration Number system plays a crucial role in preventing vehicle theft, fake number plates, and the misuse of vehicles in crimes, aligning with central government guidelines.
Vehicle owners are advised to use the Transport Department's official website to schedule an appointment for the installation of these plates. From July 2026, vehicles without HSRP will undergo special checks, and violators will face penalties as stipulated by the Motor Vehicles Act. Sarnaik emphasised the importance of following official procedures to avoid fraud.
