DPIIT Eases Import Rules for Compressor Manufacturers

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has granted manufacturers of air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment an exemption from complying with the mandatory Quality Control Order for certain compressor imports. This amendment, effective until March 31, 2027, was issued to address domestic capacity limitations and potential supply disruptions.

This relaxation means manufacturers can import compressors in specified quantities based on their 2024-25 import levels. Different percentages apply to compressors of varying capacities, allowing manufacturers to maintain production without adhering to the full QCO requirements.

GTRI highlights the importance of this decision in avoiding shortfalls during peak demand periods, recommending quality tests for imports at Indian ports. The initiative aims to support the industry until domestic manufacturing and certification capacities improve.
