In response to soaring fuel prices, Delhi's commercial vehicle drivers' unions are organizing a significant strike. Scheduled for May 21-23, these unions demand an urgent increase in taxi and auto fares. Their representatives have engaged both Delhi's Lieutenant Governor and Chief Minister, underscoring the economic struggles faced by middle-class drivers.
Numerous unions, led by the Chaalak Shakti Union, have declared a 'Chakka Jam,' urging drivers to cease operations during the strike dates. Anuj Kumar Rathore, vice-president of the union, warned of an intensified protest if governmental actions aren't expedited. The All India Motor Transport Congress has conveyed these concerns directly, emphasizing longtime fare stagnation despite increasing operational costs.
Criticism is also levied against app-based cab companies for unilaterally hiking prices, leaving traditional taxi drivers economically disadvantaged. The unions demand robust policies to curb such exploitation, with some, like the Delhi Auto Rickshaw Union, planning further protests at the Delhi Secretariat.
