Delhi Traffic Police has registered 1,170 FIRs and impounded 1,179 vehicles during a special two-day city-wide crackdown against wrong-side driving, an official said on Sunday.
The enforcement drive was conducted on May 22 and 23 across major roads, intersections, highways and accident-prone stretches in the national capital to curb the dangerous practice of motorists driving against the flow of traffic.
According to the police, a total of 12,568 challans were also issued during the operation against violators found flouting traffic norms by driving on the wrong side of the road.
A senior officer said wrong-side driving has emerged as one of the major causes of road accidents, disorderly traffic movement and head-on collisions in the city.
''Wrong-side driving is not merely a traffic violation. It is a grave and life-threatening offence that endangers innocent road users and severely disrupts traffic flow,'' the officer said.
The police said strict legal action, including registration of criminal cases, seizure of vehicles and prosecution, has been initiated against offenders.
Delhi Traffic Police also issued a stern warning that anyone found indulging in wrong-side driving would face strict legal consequences.
