Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) in Maharashtra will launch a four-day special drive to check the illegal transportation of cows ahead of Eid-ul-Azha (Bakrid) from May 25.
A release issued by Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik's office stated that strict action would be taken against illegal transportation of cows, unauthorised slaughterhouses and violations of animal welfare norms.
''As per the directions of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the transport department has directed all RTO offices in the state to launch a special checking drive. Illegal transportation and slaughter of cows will not be tolerated under any circumstances,'' Sarnaik said, adding that the status of ''Rajyamata'' has been accorded to indigenous cows by the government.
A circular issued by the transport commissioner's office stated that special checking and barricading operations will be carried out on highways, border check-posts, sensitive routes and major cities, including Mumbai.
Vehicles transporting animals will be checked for valid permits, certificates and compliance with animal welfare and transport rules.
Sarnaik stated that vehicles found violating provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, and other Central government rules would be seized.
He said incidents of illegal cattle transportation increase during certain festivals, and animals are often transported in inhuman conditions.
The transport department will coordinate with the local police, animal husbandry department, and animal welfare organisations during the drive from May 25 to 28.
