Delhi Powers Up: Rooftop Solar Installations Surge
Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (Tata Power-DDL) has surpassed 10,000 rooftop solar installations in Delhi, driven by government subsidies and awareness programs. The significant growth aligns with the Government's clean energy initiative, facilitating reduced electricity costs and contributing to sustainable development in North and North-West Delhi.
In a significant stride towards clean energy adoption, Delhi has observed a sharp rise in rooftop solar installations, propelled by Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (Tata Power-DDL). The utility company has achieved a milestone of over 10,000 installations across North and North-West Delhi, fueled by government subsidies and awareness campaigns.
As of April 2026, Tata Power-DDL reported a total of 10,466 energized solar installations with a cumulative capacity of 160.3 MWp, under its flagship Project 'Suryansh'. This growth aligns seamlessly with the Government's promotion of renewable energy as part of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, aiming to foster sustainable development and reduce reliance on traditional power sources.
The company noted a substantial uptake in residential sectors, with 8,451 households adopting rooftop solar systems. Incentives such as reduced electricity bills and the possibility to sell surplus power back to the grid have catalyzed this trend. In Fiscal Year 2025-26 alone, 5,378 new installations added 55.75 MWp capacity, marking the highest annual addition of solar power systems in Delhi.
The increase is largely attributed to financial incentives and extensive outreach efforts. Supported by Central and State subsidies of up to Rs 1.08 lakh, consumers are able to offset up-front installation costs, recovering investments within two to three years. Additionally, over 50 Cooperative Group Housing Societies and numerous commercial and industrial consumers are embracing these energy solutions.
Tata Power-DDL has also underscored consumer engagement through strategic initiatives. These include deploying 'Solar Sakhis' in rural locales, 'Solar Ambassadors' in urban areas, and conducting awareness campaigns via street plays, solar camps, and advertisements in metro stations, FM radio, and social media.
The utility has embraced technology, launching digital tools such as a solar calculator, a dedicated call centre, a WhatsApp helpline, and online onboarding processes to streamline the adoption of solar energy under the PM Surya Ghar scheme. In an exemplary move, Tata Power-DDL has also solarised 18 of its operational premises, generating 2.1 MWp of clean energy internally. (ANI)
