Ukraine's Big Leap: Boosting Defense with Swedish Gripen Jets

Ukraine will expand its combat fleet by acquiring 20 new Gripen fighter jets, while Sweden is set to donate 16 older models next year. This announcement followed a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.

A letter of intent was signed last year, aiming for Sweden to provide up to 150 Saab Gripen E models to Ukraine, though these newer versions won't be delivered until several years later. Focused on bolstering Ukraine's air defense, the country has allocated 2.5 billion euros of a 90 billion euro EU loan for these fighter jets.

The deal marks a significant day for Saab, with its shares jumping by 4.4%. CEO Micael Johansson highlighted increasing recognition of Gripen's capabilities. Sweden's commitment to Ukraine extends beyond this, with plans to send over 13 billion dollars in military and civilian aid.
