India is actively seeking preferential market access as its negotiators engage with a visiting U.S. team to finalize a bilateral trade agreement, according to sources speaking with ANI on Monday. These discussions will prioritize obtaining trade relief from U.S. Section 301 investigations, which remains a key agenda point.

The scheduled negotiations from June 1-4 are led by U.S. Chief Negotiator Brendan Lynch and India's Additional Secretary Darpan Jain. The Indian Ministry of Commerce indicates that the talks will settle details of an interim pact and further the broader Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) covering aspects like market access, non-tariff measures, customs, and investment promotion. India's Union Commerce Minister, Piyush Goyal, highlighted the ongoing meetings and noted the nearly completed framework.

With significant parts of the agreement already settled, remaining technical issues are being addressed. Both nations had previously set the framework agreement earlier this year, with minor legal adjustments being finalized. U.S. Ambassador Sergio Gore emphasized the anticipation for the agreement's conclusion, citing substantial growth in bilateral trade over the past two decades, marking India as a strategic ally for the U.S.
