New Zealand Suspends Cook Islands Aid Amid Tensions Over China Ties
New Zealand has halted NZ$18.2 million in core sector support to the Cook Islands due to strained relations over the latter's growing ties with China. This move highlights New Zealand's concerns about China's presence in the Pacific. The Cook Islands aim to restore their relationship with New Zealand.

New Zealand has suspended millions of dollars in budget funding to the Cook Islands, citing concerns over the island nation's deepening relationship with China. The decision involves halting NZ$18.2 million in core sector funding for 2025-26, as confirmed by a spokesperson for Foreign Minister Winston Peters.
The strained relations reflect growing unease in New Zealand and Australia over China's increasing influence in the Pacific, which they view as a potential security threat. In addition to suspending funding to the Cook Islands, New Zealand has also stopped new development funding to Kiribati.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, currently visiting China, is expected to discuss the situation with Chinese leaders. The Cook Islands, committed to mending ties with New Zealand, continue to stress their long-standing security and defense partnership. However, differences in interpreting consultation requirements have been identified as key issues in the current rift.
