Prof Suman Chakraborty: Leading IIT Kharagpur Into the Future

Prof Suman Chakraborty officially assumed the role of fulltime director of IIT Kharagpur on Monday. According to an institute spokesperson, he replaces Amit Patra, who acted as interim director since January 1 following the end of V.K. Tewari's term on December 31, 2024.
Chakraborty, a distinguished academic in mechanical engineering, is celebrated nationally and internationally for his work at the intersection of fluid mechanics, biomedical engineering, and technology-driven societal applications. His appointment is seen as a significant step for the prestigious institute.
Having been part of IIT Kharagpur since 2002, Chakraborty advanced from assistant to senior professor by 2008, and will now lead the institution for a five-year term or until reaching the age of 70, whichever comes first.
