Fresh enrolments at Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) across India have reached a five-year low for the 2024-25 academic year, according to data from the Ministry of Education presented in the Lok Sabha.
Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan revealed that enrolments decreased to over 1.39 lakh from more than 1.75 lakh in the 2023-24 academic year. Comparatively, enrolment numbers were over 1.57 lakh in 2022-23, more than 1.82 lakh in 2021-22, and above 1.95 lakh in 2020-21.
With 1,280 KVs operating nationwide, Pradhan stated that opening new KVs is a continuous effort primarily serving the children of central government employees. Proposals for new KVs require ministry sponsorship and resource commitments, subject to approval by competent authorities.
