Brown University Strikes $50 Million Deal to Restore Federal Research Funding
Brown University has agreed to a $50 million deal with the Trump administration to restore funding for health and medical research, amid compliance reviews. The deal also involves supporting a thriving Jewish community on campus. Concerns over free speech and academic freedom remain amid federal threats to funding over campus protests.

Brown University has secured a significant agreement with President Donald Trump's administration, committing to pay $50 million over the next decade to support workforce development in Rhode Island. This deal comes as part of efforts to restore federal funding for the university's vital medical and health sciences research programs.
The Trump administration had previously threatened to cut federal funds for institutions involved in pro-Palestinian protests, climate initiatives, and diversity programs, sparking academic freedom concerns. Columbia and Harvard Universities faced similar federal probes, with Columbia agreeing to a $220 million settlement.
Under the deal, Brown will focus on creating a thriving Jewish community and enriching its Judaic Studies Program, while addressing campus climate issues. Despite the move, issues around Islamophobia, antisemitism, and the implications for free speech continue to be debated by rights advocates.
