In a significant development, Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has reappointed Dr. Ciza Thomas and Dr. K Sivaprasad as interim Vice Chancellors of two prominent state universities. This move follows a recent Supreme Court approval, ending a prolonged legal tussle concerning the extent of the Chancellor's authority over appointments.
The Supreme Court's decision on July 30 has been pivotal, aligning with the Governor's authority to appoint interim Vice Chancellors as dictated by University Acts, despite objections from the Kerala state government. The legal contention had initially favored the state, with both the Kerala High Court and a division bench ruling against the Governor's actions earlier this year.
Dr. Thomas, a former top official in the Directorate of Technical Education, will lead the Kerala University of Digital Sciences, Innovation and Technology, while Dr. Sivaprasad from Cochin University's Ship Technology Department will head the APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University. Both will serve in these positions for up to six months or until permanent successors are appointed.
